Research approach

 


Efficacy is proven by a compound's effect on DNA, mRNA, protein, and metabolite levels and by an organism's response by means of, e.g., food intake of hormone release. We assess the responses of cells in culture or humans by profiling gene expression, protein expression, and metabolic levels with the goal of understanding the underlying physiological changes.

In general, studies on cells in culture take into account (i) systemic concentrations that are reached after dietary intake of the test compound, and (ii) concentrations of the test compound’s metabolites formed upon absorption and metabolic transformations. Pre-clinical human intervention studies are used to verify the effects seen in cells in culture, and to facilitate the development of satiating food formulations in collaboration with the food industry.
